ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS

OC’s Environmental Policy is committed to good environmental practice as part of our overall approach to corporate and social responsibility. We recognize that we have a responsibility to minimize our impacts on the environment as much as possible, and to conduct our business in a way which contributes to the sustainability of the environment in which we work and deliver our services, whilst continuing to deliver a high quality service to our clients.

As a leading global Copper Material Manufacture, OC has environmental impacts straightly to suppliers, our operational processes, right through to the final delivery of our products. Therefore, managing these impacts is a major challenge in the copper industry.

The important steps we are taking help reduce costs, identify market opportunities, differentiate our business from competitors, and most importantly, we are contributing to improving our environment.

Our policy is to take the environment into account in all appropriate decision making, not only in compliance with legislative and statutory environmental requirements, but in recognition that a quality environment should be available to all, not just to those who can afford it. 

Our commitment, therefore, is a proactive and anticipatory approach.

ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION

Environmental issues for our direct business operations currently is our commitment. We embed sustainable development including environmental action in all our activities. Some of the specific ways in which we support environmental action which is a proactive and anticipatory approach are as following. 

What we are doing…

Create and seek approaches and methods of reduction of resources, energy, emission, waste and greenhouse gas in order to protect, control and minimize impacts to environment, community and society.


We are taking systematic steps to reduce and control the direct environmental impacts of our operations, including:

  • Conducting product development in consideration of environmental protection
  • Reducing environmental load through development of compact products and systems thus reducing emissions from our production
  • Reducing the resources we use by using of renewable resources and the sustainable management of resources
  • Using raw materials with reduced environmental impact
  • Preventing waste water discharge, chemicals and hazardous waste
  • Conserving energy and recycle by producing products that are 100% recyclable
  • Reducing the impacts of our logistics

One of the way we are working to protect the environment is through the organized and systematic implementation of the Environmental Management System, ISO 14001. Our environmental policy, strategies, and management systems are fundamental – Oriental Copper is committed to improving environmental performance. We operate a rigorous environmental management system and have implemented and completed IS014001 certification since 2001.

We are educating…

Tackling energy use and climate change is priority for everyone. At Oriental Copper, we agree that every business is responsible for playing their part in making a cleaner and greener environment. Green Industrial Certificate is evidence of environmental management have assessed. We continue to promote ways in which we help the electrical energy industry increase energy efficiency, reduce waste and lower costs.

For our children’s sake, a safe clean environment is
everyone’s responsibility. To create and seek approaches and methods of reduction of resources, energy, emission, waste and greenhouse gas in order to protect, control and minimize impacts to environment, community and society is our concern. A sustainable world demands the better and a more efficient use of the world’s resources, reduction in CO2 emissions, controls of pollutants and the more efficient use of energy.

Oriental Copper (OC) aims to be a global organization that creating new value, and contributing broadly to society, strives to achieve prosperity and realize the dreams of all our stakeholders through valid business activities in strict adherence to our Corporate Mission Statement.

OC is determined to advance its copper products and related businesses ethically and responsibly. Its commitment towards stakeholders, communities, society, and environments are detailed as follow:

1. Conducting business in accordance with business ethics and good governance

1.1 Fair conduct

Guidelines to treat all stakeholders with responsibility are provided in the Company’s code of conduct. Stakeholders include shareholders, employees, customers, trading partners, creditors, competitors, as well as local communities, wider society, the environment and government agencies.

The Company’s code of conduct also embraces the principles of free competition, the prevention of conflicts of interest and infringements of intellectual property rights, and anti-corruption. 

1.2 Legality

Our business will ensure fair business transactions, to abide by all applicable laws, rules and regulations, and to prevent extortion, bribery and all other forms of corrupt business practices by:

  • Respect the law
  • Honor its internal policies
  • Ensure that all its business operations are fair and legitimate
  • Keep every partnership and collaboration open and transparent

1.3  Business ethics

OC emphasizes on conducting business with honesty, fairness, ethics and is determined to abide by laws, trade ethics and fair competition. OC will always conduct business with integrity and respect to human rights. We promise ourselves to promote:

  • Safety and fair dealing
  • Respect toward the consumer
  • Anti-bribery and anti-corruption practices

1.4 Consumer liability

OC commits itself to dealing honestly with customers (in other words, they are consumers) by complying with any agreements made in accordance with applicable standards required by law. Quality control is emphasized in all steps of the production process. In addition, it stresses the importance of ensuring that skilled personnel are available, and the stringent measures of quality control in the production process, from the procurement of the raw materials until the manufactured end products.

2. Human Rights

OC is dedicated to protecting human rights. We are comitted equal opportunity employer and will abide by all fair labor practices. We’ll ensure that our activities do not directly or indirectly violate human rights in any country. We commit Human rights and employment policies for developing sustainable economy as the following:

  1. Respect human rights and not to be complicit in human rights abuses by emphasizing the equitable treatment of those within and outside of the company. Respect for and protection of human rights are promoted in order to prevent OC’s business from involving the infringement of human rights, e.g. forced labor and child labor.
  2. Internally, OC promotes a mechanism for the monitoring of all employees’ compliance with its rules on human rights
  3. Externally, OC encourages all joint venture parties, trading partners and stakeholders to follow the principles of preserving human rights in accordance with international standards.

3. Fair Treatment to Employees

OC is committed to providing the best standards of staff welfare within the constraints of our business size and scale. Our staff’s well being is of mindedly importance to us as a people oriented business. We are well aware of the importance of corporate and human resource development, focusing on efficiently implementing operating procedures, clearly defining the scope of employees’ roles and duties, and fair treatment to employees with the recognition that such matters would expand employee’s capacity leading us to fulfill the increment of business value as well as promote competitive edge and sustainable growth of the Company. As such, policies and principles are prescribed as follows.

3.1 Fair labor practices

  • Employees at all levels are encouraged to treat their colleagues with respect. Taking advantage of other colleagues is ardently discouraged 
  • In relation to labor practices, OC has a comprehensive policy of human resources management involving recruitment, HR development and training, fair remuneration and welfare benefits. 

3.2 Remuneration and welfare benefits

  • OC has a policy to provide fair remuneration, enhance job security and promote career paths for all employees.
  • OC provides all necessary employee welfare benefits as required by law, such as social security benefits. Also offered are extra welfare benefits other than those required by law, such as health and accident insurance, financial contributions towards the funeral costs of employee’s parents, and scholarships for the children of employees.

3.3 Know-how improvement and training

  • OC promotes HR development by encouraging all employees to improve upon their knowledge, and enhance their ability, potential, attitude, morals and ethics, and embrace the spirit of teamwork.
  • All employees are offered opportunities for career prospects, with training courses provided to employees at all levels with a view to improving their professional skills.
  • Training workshops and seminars are organized from time to time for our staffs in order to develop knowledge, ability, potential, attitudes, ethics and team work skill that concern with our improvements. 
  • OC also Invests in the personnel capability enhancement by providing the skill and knowledge development and relevant resources as well as safety in workplace to build ‘creative thinking’ atmosphere and fully optimize employees’ potential and capacity 

3.4 Occupational health and safety

  • OC’s policy stresses the importance of employee occupational health and safety in a good workplace. 
  • Great efforts that have been made to implement precautionary measures to avoid work-related accidents with great efforts with safety awareness is established among employees. 
  • Training sessions are held from time to time to promote and educate all employees about occupational health and safety.
  • We provide safe working condition and sanitary workplace by issuing measures for accident prevention, encouraging awareness of safety including training, promoting good health and taking good care of workplace to keep it safe and hygienic.
    All employees are encouraged to keep the workspace in a hygienic and safe condition at all times.
  • We provide annual medical check-up to employees of all levels by taking into account risk factors relating to ranking, age, gender and work environment of each individual employee.

4. Responsibility to Customers

OC is determined to develop products that meet the satisfaction and utmost benefits of customers and adheres to deal with customers with responsibility and honesty in accordance with the following policies.

  1. We regard the quality and standard of the products as essential by focusing on high quality raw materials, production under good standard and regular improvement of product quality so that the customers shall get good quality and with utmost satisfaction.
  2. We regard product safety as essential and wants the customers to receive the products of quality and safety that matches relevant specification, requirements and international standards and rules.
  3. We respect fair marketing by providing customers the information relating to the products which is correct, undistorted, not vague or not overstated so that the customers get correct and sufficient information for making decision.
  4. We provide customer relationship scheme to communicate with customers and to receive complaints regarding the products so as to respond to the customers’ need in due time.
  5. We keeps confidential the customers’ information and does not use the information illegitimately.

5. Responsibility to Suppliers, Creditors and Competitors

OC will also ensure that we deal responsibly, openly and fairly with Suppliers, Creditors and Competitors by:

  1. We adhere to covenants that are fair to suppliers; abides by the prescribed anti-corruption measures; respect the rights in property or ownership of suppliers; not takes advantages over suppliers and promotes joint activities with suppliers in respect of corporate social responsibility.
  2. We abide by agreements concluded with creditors. In the case that the Company cannot repay the debt as scheduled, the Company shall inform the creditor so as to solve the matter together.
  3. We compete fairly in business and does not cheat, obstruct or do any act against fair competition which is prohibited by law.

6. Anti-corruption

  1. OC manages its business on the basis of transparency and ethics and complies with the policy and laws related to anti-corruption, bribery and inappropriate benefits to government officials or private sectors.
  2. OC prescribes the organization structure by clearly dividing duties, responsibility, work process and line of command in each division in order to facilitate the balance of power and intra-audit. 
  3. OC provides the Manual on Anti-Corruption which compiles policies, ethics, regulations, rules and work processes for the directors, executives and staff to implement.

7. Environment Protection

OC recognizes the need to protect the natural environment. Keeping our environment clean and unpolluted is a benefit to all. We’ll always follow best practices when disposing garbage and using chemical substances. 

  1. We emphasize on caretaking of environment and avoidance of jeopardizing environment.
  2. We manage the manufacturing process to ensure that it strictly complies with the law relating to environment protection. 
  3. We develop manufacturing process and selects materials which are nature and environment friendly; sets precautionary measures for any operation which contains risks relating to environment. 
  4. We utilizes resources and energy efficiently by way of reduce-reuse-recycle as much as possible and manages the waste from production process responsibly.

8. Community and Social Development

OC strongly aims to contribute benefits to the country’s economy and society and to be a good citizen that complies with all applicable laws and regulations. 

We are well aware of our responsibility to community and society in order to foster the strength of community. We, therefore, has a policy to assist and develop the society by cooperating with communities around the operating areas in various activities, providing jobs to local people, disclosing any information that would have adverse impact on community and responding rapidly and efficiently to circumstances that affect community, society and environment resulting from the Company’s operation. The Company also encourages its employees to build up responsibility to environment and society and cooperates with other groups or networks to develop the targeted communities each year. 

  1. We will preserve a budget to make monetary donations. These donations will aim to religious donation, education, community events and etc. Our company may initiate and support community investment and educational programs. For example, it may begin partnerships with vendors for constructing public buildings. It can provide support to nonprofit organizations or movements to promote cultural and economic development of global and local communities
  2. We will encourage our employees to volunteer. They can volunteer through programs organized internally or externally. Our company may sponsor volunteering events from other organizations
  3. We will encourage and promote participation of the community and stakeholders by opening for listening their advices, constructive and transparent dialogue, fair treatment, respect of diversity, supporting their quality living and community empowerment.
  4. We will collaborate with public sector, industrial associations, business partners, civil society and other stakeholders in developing and/ or applying sustainability standard and practices generally accepted by industry and/or relevant sectors.
  5. We will participate in community and social development through the development of education and the promotion of social innovation beneficial to the communities for enhancing sustainable development.

9. Promotion of Innovation that responds to corporate social responsibility

Oriental Copper encourages its employees to create innovation which would respond to the corporate social responsibility policy, e.g. saving natural resource and energy, waste management, control of waste discharge, etc. Such innovation aimed to generate more efficiency or effectiveness may vary by different types, including novelty, improvement, adjustment, modification or alteration. The Company is willing to disseminate the innovation that would be useful to society and environment in appropriate ways.

  1. OC has been fully concerning with “Green Innovation”, we recognize the value and importance of non-renewable resources, as well as the importance of environmental conservation and social responsibility. Therefore, resources preservation is one of the important policy   imposed to underline the Company’s strong commitment to efficiently using our resources in its operations and manufacturing activities which are considered as “Process Innovation”
  2. We also emphasize energy saving practices by adopting innovation and efficient management systems, such as using solar energy in our power generation business. 
  3. Not only “Process Innovation” but also owing to our president’s foresight vision, we had also dedicated our attempt to do our research and development to create our new “Product Innovation” to help conserve energy for our customers and also for our global environment. Our innovation has been introduced to our customers and known as:

  • “Twist Bar Innovation” for switchboard application
  • “ Profile Bar and Non-Weld Edgewise Elbow Innovation” for busduct application

OC will actively invest in R&D and also be open to suggestions and listen carefully to ideas and use them as an initiative for our company strategy to continuously improve our business for sustainable future.
